We review ebooks, courses and tools for writers, so you can make good decisions about how to invest in your writing career.
About the creator: Alexis Grant is a digital strategist and entrepreneur. Her company helps small businesses with blogging, email marketing and social media. She also creates digital guides and courses that help go-getters achieve their dreams. (Full disclosure: Alexis is also founder of The Write Life!)
Who It’s For: Although it’s billed specifically for writers, the course is a good fit for anyone who wants to grow their network on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn but isn’t sure how to go about it. If you understand the basics but lack the focus or know-how to use these platforms to your advantage, this course is definitely for you.
It’s not for absolute newbies who don’t know what RT means, nor is it for those whose irises are shaped like little blue birds. If you fall somewhere in between though, you’re going to love it.
What It Will Help You Do: Social Media for Writers is all about using social media strategically to cultivate REAL-LIFE connections that will help you get from where you are to where you want to be. We all know that online networking is the key to connecting with those people who will help us reach our career goals, find work and so on. The problem is figuring out how to do that in a way that’s sustainable over the long term.
Ultimately, your success is determined by your goals, strategy and know-how, and this course more than delivers on all three of those areas.
It teaches you how to get on the radar of the people you want to notice you, as well as how to build your network strategically, as opposed to just throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks. The course includes practical tips aimed at ensuring you make the most of your time on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, including introducing you to little-known, useful features.
What’s Included: The course consists of 20 practical, easy to implement tips. Each works well on its own, but together they make up a formidable action plan to grow a kick-ass network in no time. It’s available on demand, so as soon as you sign up you’ll receive a welcome email followed by one action email every morning for the next 20 days.
The Best Part: The absolute best part about the course is that you only get one task per day. We’re all busy, and it’s easy to delay expanding our skill sets because we “don’t have time.”
With this course, I looked forward to the daily emails, wondering what small step I’d be taking that day to bring me closer to my goal. However, I’d advise you to set aside more than the recommended 15-20 minutes each day, because in some cases the tasks require a little digging.
What Would Make It Even Better: I think the only thing that might have made the course better is emphasizing the point that Lesson 1: Identifying Targets is a particularly meaty lesson and therefore requires more time than the others. It sets the foundation for the rest of the course and if you don’t give it the attention it requires you’ll find yourself floundering pretty quickly.
How It Changed My Life: The course showed me that having a social media strategy is not just attainable; it’s actually fun. Of course it still requires work, but now networking online is something I look forward to. An unexpected, yet welcome, side effect for me was that sticking to the tasks at hand made it much easier to avoid falling into the wormhole that is social media.
One quick (and perhaps obvious) caveat: this course is not a quick fix. You need to take the tools you learn here and apply them consistently in order to see a difference.
Our Recommendation: Social Media for Writers is perfect for beginner-to-intermediate folks who know the basics but want to make better use of the time they spend online. You’ll learn how to use social media to work toward your goals, grow your blog community and harness that Twitter power you’ve heard so much about.
