We review ebooks, courses and tools for writers, so you can make good decisions about how to invest in your writing career.
About the creator: Alexis Grant is an entrepreneurial writer and digital strategist who’s using her writing skills to create her own career.
A journalist who left her day job at U.S. News & World Report in mid-2011, she makes her living helping small businesses with social media and blogging and selling digital guides and courses on her website. She’s also Managing Editor of this site, The Write Life.
Who It’s For: Aspiring entrepreneurs and newbie freelancers.
What It Will Help You Do: The ebook helps you ask yourself the key questions you need to answer before making the leap from employee to self-employed.
What’s Included: A 92-page ebook.
The Best Part: I liked how she shared her personal experience, including her specific financial details. This made it relatable and measurable.
Alexis has a fun and upbeat personality that shines through her writing; reading the ebook is like having your own personal cheerleader! It was a quick read; it only took me a couple of days to get through it.
What Would Make It Even Better: I would have liked to have specific actions steps, rather than just questions at the end of each chapter. I find it helpful to read something, complete an assigned task, then move onto the next section of reading. That would have made the guide more actionable for me.
Since Alexis wrote the ebook a couple of years ago, I’m really curious to know how her situation has changed now that she’s further down the path of self-employment. For example, I wonder whether her “current income pie” looks more like her “passion income pie.” I’d love to learn what she has learned since publishing this guide.
How It Changed My Life: I totally agree with Alexis’ three big goals as she transitioned from a full time job to a full time hustle:
- Do work you love
- Create your own flexible “workstyle”
- Make enough money to support your family
These are my top three goals as well. Just this week I gave notice to my day job and will be transitioning more into a full-time freelancer role in the next couple of months! It’s an exciting, but scary time for me.
Our Recommendation: Alexis does a great job of talking through all of the potential aspects of going from employee to self-employed worker. She’s authentic and motivated to help others succeed on their own solopreneur paths. Going through this ebook at such a pivotal time in my own transition helped me to feel even more confident in my leap into freelancing.
